Services Agreement
Before engaging in Cooper’s Relationship IntoMeSee or other intensive couples work, it is important for the couple to make some key agreements and commitments. Here are some recommended agreements and commitments:
- Commitment to the Process Both partners need to commit fully to the process of IntoMeSee. This means being curious, loving, open, non-judgmental, vulnerable, and willing to look at themselves and take responsibility for their role in the relationship dynamics. A half-hearted effort will likely not lead to meaningful change.
- Be willing to engage in active listening to truly understand the experience of each other. Seek first to understand before being understood
- No Threats of Leaving/Divorce Couples should agree to remove any threats of leaving or getting divorced from the table, at least temporarily during the IntoMeSee process. These threats undermine safety and make it difficult for partners to open up. A commitment period (e.g. 6 months, 1 year) with no option of separation can allow the work to progress.
- Confidentiality Agreement Couples should agree to keep shared information within the IntoMeSee space confidential from others outside the relationship. This creates safety for vulnerability
- Commitment to Homework Much of the work happens between sessions through homework assignments, dialogues, exercises, etc. Couples must commit to doing this work which reinforces the skills learned in therapy.
- Patience and Persistence Change doesn't happen overnight. Couples should commit to sticking with the process, even when it gets difficult or uncomfortable. Having patience and persistence is key.
- Speak From Personal Experience Agree to speak only from personal experience using "I" statements, rather than blaming or attacking the other partner. This reduces defensiveness.
- No Violence or Abuse There must be an agreement that no form of violence (physical, verbal, emotional, psychological) will be accepted within the relationship during this process.
- Create a Safe Space Commit to creating an environment of safety, respect and non-judgment where each partner feels able to share authentically without fear.
- Commitment to Growth Have a mindset of growth - committing to developing greater self-awareness, empathy, and skills for the relationship rather than just solving surface issues.
Making these types of agreements upfront provides a foundation of safety and commitment for the vulnerable work of repairing and transforming the relationship through therapy. The agreements hold both partners accountable.
